Dr. Apel is a principal key expert for smart grid solution in Siemens AG. He is heading the Technology & Innovation department responsible for the distribution and infrastructure solutions. He gained experience in development of digital protection relay algorithms and in programming of network analysis applications.
After receiving his doctorate of electrical engineering, he joined ABB as network application specialist. He extended his knowledge to the whole energy automation portfolio, comprising substation equipment, telecommunication and control center systems. Then, he took over the product lifecycle management for EMS/DMS solutions.
Later he joined Siemens AG starting as a product lifecycle manager for control center solutions and later took over the global portfolio management department. Since 2008 Dr. Apel focuses on the development of Smart Grid solutions and acts today as a “Technology Scout” for the Energy Management Division.
Dr. Apel is a member of the CIGRE working group D2.24: “EMS Architectures for the 21st Century” and a steering committee member of the EPCC International Workshops on Power Control Center. He is the German representative in the CAG of the IEC System Committee “Smart Energy” and the Convener of SyC SE/WG5.
On European level, he has worked in the use case team for European Union Smart Grid Standardization Mandate (M490) and is currently a member of the T&D Europe Task Force Smart Grid. Dr. Apel is also a member in several expert committees in the German organizations VDE/ETG/DKE and ZVEI.
